i'm organizing a followup expedition into the ship.
i understand that our predecessors may still be suffering from the after effects of their last mission.
i understand also that it may be of universal benefit to the passengers aboard this ship to establish a baseline of medical data from which specific deviations might be identified and potentially treated before they manifest as gills.
do you agree?

It's possible your predecessors are suffering from those yes.
Establishing baseline is a good notion. Though at the point that deviations occur gills probably are as well to be honest. Nonetheless pinpointing organic bases gets us a step closer to exploring intervention and causes.

That's exactly right mate. present results indicate as much and it fucking blows. Im concerned that what has changed is not necessarily observable from neuro-imaging or neuropsychological testing. it's certainly worth confirming. however, I do hope you don't wind up having anything catastrophic happen out there
you could encourage the general population to submit [ this is why erik doesn't get to write PSAs ] to preventative screenings in medbay after every jump.
