This post is William's IC inbox at ataraxion. You can drop network or action stuff that doesn't quite feel like it fits or warrants a post on the main communities in here.
If he said someone was an idiot who told him how to open a door they both knew he wasn't meant to open, & he went off & opened it anyway because he thought what was inside would get me thrown out of school, no.
How, [starting over again apparently. Without video, it's hard to tell that he's among other things, somewhat less shaven than usual, slightly more drunk than usual. Neither of these conditions fully excusing what he's doing. what he's about to do,] how's it even those fucking mongs got it in their heads to intervene and you're still sticking up for him about it?
Getting bloody expelled was worse than another kid dying? You don't even fucking believe that. Maybe he fucking believes that, and I suppose that's the bloody point then.
[ He almost doesn't answer; even without video, it's easy to tell that Remus is tired—sleepy, hoarse, a little muffled and slurry from having his face smushed sideways onto a pillow. But also very patient-sounding. Kind of. If William is very good at discerning vocal tones, what he actually sounds like is someone who is trying very hard to sound patient while actually being irate and exhausted. ]
I did say he was an idiot. But we were fifteen, [ sixteen, whatever—Remus was fifteen ] and he didn't—it would have been as bad for me, if anything had happened. Maybe worse. Even if he were capable of plotting to murder to Severus, remotely, from the dinner table, he wouldn't have done that to me.
[If anything, it sounds like the fatigue in Remus' voice simply aggravates William further. Or maybe the patience. Why anyone would get madder when subjected to An Unmistakable Tone of Patience will remain a mystery to our werewolf audience maybe unless our werewolf audience is doing it on purpose.] Well I've got fucking news for you, mate: he's not fifteen now.
But he's still a raging cunt and you've still got his back, and maybe you're due some fucking congratulations that your bloody werewolf drama isn't collateral damage anymore— [it comes out in a rush; he fails to even skip a beat,] so congratulations! But he was a royal bitch to Severus while Severus is here, dragging him out for the DUPRR, smearing him over the network. [There's a small space where William remembers to breathe. And then he gets louder.] Now he's starting a stupid mess again, and you might as well have popped up in a maid's fucking tulle skirt to clean up after him.
Maybe you've been living in the stink of your own piss so long you don't know what it means anymore, so I'll fucking explain-- it means you're a Goddamn coward.
[ Remus might have started talking over William several sentences ago if not for bloody werewolf drama snapping his mouth shut and making his chest constrict. (It doesn't matter to hardly anyone here, he knows that, but it matters to him.) Still, while William is carrying on, Remus considers each of the following, for a very flexible definition of considered that encompasses a lot of half-thoughts and fleeting impulses:
1. Asking why they're arguing about an accidental near-death during school instead of any number of intentional deaths after it.
2. Tracking William down, post-moon misery or no, and punching him in his stupid nose.
3. Promising to tell Sirius to stop calling people prats on the network so often and instead begin calling them murderers behind their backs, or perhaps war criminals with genocidal leanings, depending on what level of detail is most appropriate.
4. Inquiring as to what stupid mess exactly is being started again, is this about William's mother, does he need to talk about it.
5. What is a tulle skirt?
6. He liked William better when he didn't have a soul.
But all of these things remain unspoken—and buried obnoxiously in meta, sorry—because William caps off with coward. In thirteen or so years Remus will pull his wand on Harry Potter over that one. He'd do the same to William, probably, if they were in the same room and if he weren't so incredibly tired. ]
You don't, [ he says, and then ruins his own pissy one-liner by pausing to cough around some of the phlegm that's overcompensating in his raw throat and, in the process, making his comms device fall from where it was lying on his upturned ear. He needs a few seconds to recover it. But then: ] You don't know a bloody thing about me, William. Or him. Just leave him alone.
Well, whose grand fucking design is that, [says William, who never talks about himself either, but only because there's nothing to say-- especially not about wars fought behind masks and mysterious doors at highschool. Also, dear the secret mind of Remus Lupin, that fish one was especially shitty.
Somehow, he actually gets precipitously louder when he demands:] Are you fucking dying on the phone right now?
[ Even louder means very loud, William, fucking hell. Remus
shuts his eyes against it and thinks about disconnecting and whether or not
that would make him look like a coward, as opposed to someone who just
doesn't care what William Tsang thinks, which is the source of the slight
delay before he says, with a break in his patience for uncharacteristic
petulance, ] No. 'Werewolf drama'.
[In turn, its said petulance that sticks William with pause.
He still sounds mad when he talks again, but not as loud.]
Does this 'bad Jump' free pass last indefinitely? Or is there some kind of an expiration date for the next time I can say shit to him if he makes some obnoxious comment about my mum?
If you'd like to insult his mother, I won't stop you, [ Remus says, sounding calm again. Patient. Distantly amused. Only slightly like he's dying. ] But it might make him like you, and I know you don't want that.
[Inevitably, that generates a fresh spike of annoyance-- but this time, at least, William doesn't start yelling again. Instead, he makes an irritated sound in the back of his throat.]
You're an arsehole too, and you both deserve each other. [Succinct, clearly leaving mums out, he hangs up and goes to look at Sirius' thread again.]
